The Greater Good?

The Ethical Self:

 

I am in agreeance that online communication, because it offers anonymity, encourages greater openness and honesty. Unfortunately this is not always the case and I am strongly of the opinion that the vast new possibilities of online communications have led to greater harm than good. Today’s online world can be extremely cruel and shallow minded, meaning that the material ourselves and others post, is at one’s own risk and is susceptible to criticism.

 

In ways it is evident that online communication due to its openness and honesty, have lead to greater good. In worldwide disasters and in the cases of terrorist attacks or earthquakes, Facebook has a unique feature added to its platforms that allows users to simply ‘Check In’. “Safety check allows people in the area of any tragedy, to mark themselves okay and give their loved ones some peace of mind” (Metro.co.uk, 2017) This is a superb situation in which online communication has been used to benefit its online users.

On the contrary, the possibilities of online communication can be seen to have lead to greater harm than good when we are introduced to flaming, trolling or cyberbullying, have a huge negative impact on the lives of many users that fall victim to these cruel attacks. There are millions of online bullies that hide behind the depths of their computer screen or mobile phone, viciously attacking others to make them feel weak and vulnerable, making themselves seem bigger and getting a thrill from this.
As a result of this reckless and needless behaviour, the occurrence of suicides and psychological  damage is extremely prominent and widespread within our online world in today’s society. Cyber-bullying is taking its toll on our younger generation, cyber-bullying and sexting are rapidly coming to the public’s attention, leading to great harm “At the end of last month 15-year-old Ciara Pugsley, from Leitrim, lost her life after being bullied by teens online.” (Irishexaminer.com, 2017) people should fall victims of cyber-bullying due to other users being shallow and cruel and this is a prime example of where online communications lead to greater harm.

Blog Post 2: The Written Self

 

This weeks topic focused on the written self, how one presents themselves in their online world, and how we perceive others in our online world that surrounds us in our daily lives. This week we focused on the digital written self and the different writing technologies, including oral versus written and printed versus handwritten and the various techniques within. When we reflect on the written self, there are multiple questions to be asked.

 

  • Who are we writing for?
  • Why are we writing
  • What is the purpose?
  • Is it private? Or for everyone to see?
  • What are we trying to achieve?

 

The majority of internet users today participate in blogs,the definition of a blog is perceived to be ‘A frequently updated website consisting of dated entries arranged in chronological order so that the most recent post appears first. The digital written self can be seen widespread throughout our daily lives in the form of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and many other technological platforms.

 

With next to near all platforms consumed by advertisements and promotional ads for various different products and services, it can prove to be difficult to understand the authenticity of the post and the content being relayed.

 

In the Facebook post below, we see a printed advertisement from ‘Deliveroo’ a service that lets you order food from various restaurants within your chosen area. In the advertisement they offer a job and entices the reader by offering them a job that offers them money and an opportunity to get fit. We must ask ourselves,

 

  • Who is writing the advertisement?
  • Is the advertisement intended for people that are not fit?
  • Is the advertisement intended for people who are fit?
  • What story is being told?

In the Twitter post that follows below, it tells the story of  the recent outrage that is happening in Catalonia. The tweet explains to us that 70 armed policemen have been assaulted and that a  200 inhabitants village has been destroyed, leaving villagers devastated.

 

What does this tweet tell us? What story does it relay?

 

We as the readers must ask ourselves,

  • What story is being told
  • What is the intended audience of the tweet?
  • What can be done to help?
  • What is trying to be portrayed?

From reading the tweet is it evident that there is a cry for help to stop all violence and resolve all issues and to decide on the Catalonia Independence referendum

In this week of the module IS30350 (The Digital Self) we discussed, in detail, the topic of selfies. With such detailed talk of selfies, and they different ways and methods in which they are used, one must ask themselves, what is a selfie? The official definition for a selfie is a ‘Self-portrait taken with your cell phone’.

For this weeks assignment for IS30350 for my E-Portfolio I have chosen to discuss ‘the invisible student selfie’. In our everyday student lives, each and everyone of us takes at least a dozen selfies a day, whether it be for Instagram or Facebook or for snapchat or tinder, but for what purpose do we take these selfies? What meaning do they have? And who are they meant for?

In the Picture that I have posted with my E-Portfolio for this week, a coffee cup is notably present, a typical example of the invisible student selfie and the ways of college life itself, thousands of selfies are taken every single day across universities worldwide of students tea and coffee representing and mentioning their presence within their college life.

Selfies are and can be used to express a deeper meaning rather than just a photograph of an event or a place, as discussed in class, we must focus on the gaze, who is looking at the selfie? And who is it intended for? We also must focus on our agency within a selfie, the degree of control that we have over portraying who and what we are.

Overall is it evident that in today’s society, selfie have and are used for multiple different reasons and have meanings that are sometimes only know to the selfie taker themselves.

Badge 5: Reflection on our Learning about Social Media

 

Having taken part and completing all the various exercises within the module, including the completion of our badges (1-4) and the completion of our weekly class notes, I have acquired a vast amount of learning and skills from Crystals class IS 20110 (Social Computing and Media) and I have several ideas on how I plan to apply my learning in future studies or careers. Having engaged with several social media tools and have explored a range of issues around the impact of social media on our lives, it is important to look back and reflect on the vast amount of learning and skills that have been obtained throughout the semester and to discuss the future challenges to continue my learning in this area.

 

At the beginning of Crystals module, we were presented with 5 learning objectives that she had aimed for us to acquire throughout the semester. These objectives were, to be familiar with a range of social computing applications, to be able to utilise social computing tools to solve information problems, to be able to identify, evaluate, and implement social computing applications for an organisation, to be aware of the social, political, and ethical issues surrounding social computing and to be familiar with future trends and possibilities rising out of social computing. I feel that by having completed all the exercises associated with the four badges within the module, that I have completed and acquired these learning objectives.

 

Each badge helped me  to to think and understand the role of social media tools in our digital society. For Badge 1, we learned how social media impacts our studies and everyday lives by posting through wikis and blogs. I feel that publishing through blogs and wikis has a substantial amount of significance and relevance in aiding and within assisting me in my academic studies and moulding my future career prospects by allowing me to explore the vast amounts of online technology tools, such as WordPress, that are widely available today. Joy Smith, Evelyn Mills, & Myers, (2009) found that that the use of these tools for assessment was effective.

 

I also feel that publishing through blogs and wikis can help to assist me immensely in my academic studies as a wiki is “a collaborative tool that allows students to contribute and modify one or more pages of course related materials (Vanderbilt, 2017). I am of the opinion that wikis and blogs assist and educate me with my academic studies as they allow you to express your knowledge and with Badge one we got you use the tool WordPress, a personal space where we can express our coursework. For my future studies and career, for example, creating blogs for a company, I hope to apply this learning by effectively aiding my colleagues in collaborative work to make sure that my line of work is carried out to the best of its ability for myself and my future colleagues.

 

For Badge 2, By completing all the relevant exercises associated within the badge (Badge 2) I have acquired a vast amount of learning and numerous new technological skills through using social media tools, that help us to use and manage the information we find.

 

One way in which social media tools help us to use and manage the information that we find is through helping us organise all relevant materials that can easily be retrieved at a later date. In badge 2 we were introduced to Pocket and Pinterest. both social bookmarking websites that allows users to create and manage different kinds of content, including pictures, videos, and text. I learned that there are also hundreds of other social media tools widely available within our reach today that can aid us manage the various information that we find. For example, one social media tool called ‘Apture’, a handy plug-in that finds photos, videos, links and related content that you can embed or link to within your posts with a single click. Extremely handy for locating and adding links to specific Web pages. Meaning all information can be retrieved at a later time. (Baer, 2008). For a future career I would have ambitions of applying these bookmarking skills by apply to Pinterest or a social bookmarking website to be apply  to apply my newly learned skills to everyday situations.

 

For badge 3, By completing the exercises associated with this badge (Badge 3) I have acquired a vast amount of learning, all of which, can be implemented when completing assessments to aid me with my academic studies or future careers. I feel that social media tools can hugely aid oneself to help you visualise information.

 

For Badge 3 we were introduced to prezi and piktochart and screen-o-matic, all social media tools that deal with visual graphics and information. I feel that these tools can majorly assist me in my future studies/careers by providing me with the skills that would be required with a career chosen field, Eg (Making a presentation in front of members of the board) dealing with visual information.

 

One major way in which social media tools can help to visualise information for yourself and others is by presenting information through a clear and engaging manner to others. For example, as Desale (2017) outlines, Graphviz is open source graph visualization software. Graph visualization is a way of representing structural information as diagrams of abstract graphs and networks.

 

For badge 4, By completing the exercises associated with this badge (Badge 4) I have acquired a vast amount of learning, all of which, can be implemented when completing assessments to aid me with my academic studies or future careers. By completing the exercises associated with badge 4, I came to the conclusion that it was possible to control your digital reach.  Reach refers to the total number of different people exposed to a medium during a given period. and this can be seen in the social media tools and activities for this badge.

 

I also feel that the social media tools and activities associated with this badge support my argument that it is possible to control our digital reach. Liu, Y. (2010) states that  Social media tools have become ubiquitous, students use them all the time. The most popular tools are Facebook, Wiki, YouTube, bulletin board, LinkedIn, blogging, and twittering. Meaning that social media tools such as buffer, feedly and facebook etc can enable us to control our digital reach by providing endless opportunities to our social engagements and our studies and everyday lives. For a future career, I plan to apply these skills to aid me in acquiring a job in the field of digital marketing.

 

Overall, having completed the semester of IS 20110 (Information and social computing) and having completed all the activities for the badges associated with this module, I have acquired a vast amount of learning that has allowed me to think critically about social media as a whole and also to contemplate how i can apply these skills in my future studies or careers.

By completing the exercises associated with this badge (Badge 4) I have acquired a vast amount of learning. In my opinion, it is possible to control your digital reach. Reach refers to the total number of different people or households exposed to a medium during a given period. and this can be seen in the social media tools and activities for this badge (Badge 4).

 

I feel that the social media tools and activities associated with this badge support my argument as, they show that it is possible to control one’s digital reach. For example, one can control their digital reach through the social media tool of Twitter. As Davidson (2017) said, don’t use more than 3 hashtags in one tweet as it may appear to be spam and reduce your tweets shareability. Hene use less to increase one’s reach and increase the impact on one’s everyday lives and studies.

 

I also feel that the social media tools and activities associated with this badge support my argument that it is possible to control our digital reach. Liu, Y. By completing the exercises associated with this badge (Badge 3) I have acquired a vast amount of learning, all of which, can be implemented when completing assessments to aid me with my academic studies. I feel that social media tools can hugely aid oneself to help you visualise information.

 

One major way in which social media tools can help to visualise information for yourself and others is by presenting information through a clear and engaging manner to others.For example, as Desale (2017) outlines, Graphviz is open source graph visualization software. Graph visualization is a way of representing structural information as diagrams of abstract graphs and networks.

 

Another major way in which social media tools can be seen to help visualise information for yourself and others is by offering a unique twist to one’s works, rather than the traditional Word and Powerpoint presentations. For example a study conducted of powerpoint Vs Prezi proved that Prezi was a more effective instructional medium for knowledge acquisition compared with traditional instruction. (Pao-Nan Chou, Chi-Cheng Chang, Pei-Fen Lu, 2015).

By completing all the relevant exercises associated within this badge (Badge 2) I have acquired a vast amount of learning and numerous new technological skills through using social media tools, that help us to use and manage the information we find. I feel that social media tools have a great influence in helping us to use and manage the various sources of information that we find.

One way in which social media tools help us to use and manage the information that we find is through helping us organise all relevant materials that can easily be retrieved at a later date.
